HideMyAss review

Would I recommend Hide My Ass VPN? Yes, if you only require a VPN service that fulfills the basic expectations. Using Hide My Ass will not dent your internet’s speed, and sometimes you won’t even notice that there is a connection at all. The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES 256-bit) that is used to secure communication is the most advanced for our time. Hide My Ass does log some user data something that I found to be problematic. The company is after all located in the UK, a member of the Five Eyes spying coalition. While it is possible to stream on Netflix with the app, errors appear from time to time. This was very frustrating to say the least.

Speed counts a lot when it comes to choosing a VPN service and this is because no one wants to set up a VPN connection that will make surfing on the internet an impossible task.

Checking VPN servers

To see the effect of a Hide My Ass VPN connection on my internet speed, I connected to servers in some of their most popular server locations. As you can see, the reduction in speed after connecting to a server in Australia was negligible. Other servers are just as fast.

Servers

900+ servers
290 countries

HideMyAss has s wide network of servers, which covers all most every corner of the world, even Africa. 960+ servers in 190 countries is a great argument for the speed and sustainability.

60+ servers in the USA is a remarable advantage compared to other typical VPNs.

Security features

The number one selling point for any VPN app is security. Things to look for when reviewing for security include the type of encryption in use, what the privacy policy covers, whether there are IP and or DNS leaks, the protocols in use, and other security features, such as kill switches.

OpenVPN

OpenVPN is an open source VPN protocol that is used by a majority of VPN service providers. It uses several protocols to secure communication between its users. These protocols include OpenSSL, HMAC authentication, and shared keys. It also supports several cryptographic algorithms to secure communication between its users. Some of the advantages of OpenVPN include: strong security, ability to bypass firewalls, easily bypasses firewalls.

AES 256-bit

Hide My Ass uses the same encryption standard (AES 256-bit) as the world’s top militaries to encrypt communication over their network of servers. This means that the privacy of your communication can’t get any more secure than that.

L2TP/IPsec

The Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol is used for strong encryption and authentication. However, as it does not provide security on itself, it has to be combined with Internet Protocol Security (IPsec). Compared to PPTP the L2TP/IPsec combination, is more secure.

IP and DNS Leaks

Any IP and or DNS leaks give personally identifying information, meaning that a VPN app that leaks such information is not worth your time or money. I set out to check whether Hide My Ass VPN service was leaking my IP address by testing it on IPleak.org. As you can see, there were no DNS or IP results. This is to say that the connection afforded by Hide My Ass VPN will truly anonymize your surfing.

Logs policy

A logs policy tells you whether your VPN service provider is tracking what servers you use, the IP address assigned to you or any your online activities. The norm for most VPN apps, is to have a strict no logs policy that is usually well spelt out. Hide My Ass log policies are a
little bit murky. The following are some of the things they collect:

  • The timestamps of your connection (most apps don’t)
  • The subnet of your original IP address
  • The IP address of the server you are using
  • The amount of data you are using

HMA says that it stores the data for only 30 days, but there is no telling whether the same is passed to the NSA or M16. No other VPN app that I have reviewed does any of this i.e. store logs.

Unblocking Netflix

Is it possible to stream Netflix with Hide My Ass VPN? There is no clear answer to this question because sometimes the app performs just as you would expect it and at other times, it disappoints. This is to say that it shows no consistency despite having dedicated servers for streaming. The following two images will show you what I mean.

Torrenting

When it comes to downloading torrents, the app is excellent! I didn’t even notice that there is a VPN connection.

Tor Check

As for the Tor browser, I did not experience any issues and I bet that users of this network will find the extra layer of privacy afforded by the Hide My Ass VPN to be welcome.

Hide My Ass allows up to 5 simultaneous connections for the pro plan. The supported platforms are: Windows, Android, IOS, and Linux. For this test, I connected to the service on my Android phone and desktop PC. All I can say is that I was very impressed by the user-friendly interface on both devices. Navigation on the app was very intuitive and there is enough documentation to make sure that you never get it wrong.

You can only download the app after making the purchase and even after that you still have to pass a Captcha test, so as to verify that you are not a robot.

Cancelling my subscription was problematic. I asked several times for my subscription to be cancelled and it only happened during the second time. The experience was a bit frustrating.
