In truth, every VPN service out there will slow down the speed of your internet connection. The real question is by what percentage?

Certainly, no one wants a service that kills their internet connection and that is why for the apps that we set our eyes on, we take the time to conduct speed tests by connecting to various servers across the world.

We put ibVPN through the same and here are the results

Checking VPN servers

As you can see, except for the France server, the speed disruptions caused by the VPN connection never exceeded 30% which is good when looking for a fast VPN connection. Thus, we can say that ibVPN is a fast VPN service.

Servers

167+ servers
50+ countries

ibVPN has 167+ servers in 50+ country locations. Most of the servers are optimized for one thing or the other. For instance, there are servers for P2P activity, streaming Tor over VPN, and just for establishing proxy connections. You can also purchase dedicated IP addresses from ibVPN.

Security features

When we talk of privacy in regards to a VPN app, it is usually about how anonymous your connection is or is going to be because that’s all that VPN apps do- make you anonymous in a world of increasing scrutiny. We looked at some of the security and privacy credentials of ibVPN and the following was what we found:

Military-grade encryption

All the communications that pass through the ibVPN servers are encrypted with the latest in encryption technology i.e. the military-grade AES 256-bit encryption standard.

While using this encryption standard, no one can eaves drop on your communications, not even the US government.

OpenVPN Protocol

Most of ibVPN’s connections are created using the popular OpenVPN protocol. It is a fast and secure way of setting up VPN connections. The majority of VPN apps rely on this technology too.

Other VPN protocols that are used by ibVPN include PPTP, SSTP and L2TP. The app will automatically select the VPN protocol that is best suited for you.

Stealth VPN Protocol

Another security feature worth noting is the internet kill switch. This feature is common in most VPN apps and it works by disconnecting the user from the internet whenever they are choosing between servers or when the app malfunctions.
In other words, it ensures that no matter what happens to the app, your identity will always be protected.

ShadowSocks Protocol

ShadowSocks is a feature that is especially made to bypass the Great Firewall of China. Be warned, however, that turning this feature on will greatly slow the speed of your internet connection.

Double VPN

Double VPN is a technology that allows you to surf the internet anonymously by connecting to a chain of VPN servers. An accurate description of the technology is a VPN on top of a VPN.
Some of the advantages of double VPN include:

  • Double encryption of your communications
  • Improved connection speeds

Double VPN is recommended for use in unsafe public networks, such as free Wi-Fi zones.

Internet kill switch

Unlike other VPN apps that we have reviewed thus far, the internet kill switch on ibVPN is enabled by default. That means whenever you connect to any of ibVPN’s servers, you are protected against discovery, if the app malfunctions. Even when changing between servers, the app will temporarily kill your internet connection in an effort to protect your online privacy.

IP and DNS Leaks

The true test of a VPN app is whether or not it is able to create an anonymous connection. Such a connection has two characteristics; IP leak and DNS leak protections.

We wanted to see whether ibVPN would pass that test, so we connected to one of their servers and headed to ipleak.org, a site that tests for leaks of the kind we are talking about. Here are the results.

The IP address that you see above is the one that was assigned to us by the VPN app. It says that we are in America while in truth, we are located thousands of miles away.

The IP leak results even note “No VPN detected”, it is a testament to how effective the VPN app is at creating an anonymous identity.

DNS Leak Test Results

Details of our DNS server don’t show in the above screenshot. We would like it to remain that way.

Logs policy

What is a logs policy? A logs policy details what a VPN company does with the data they collect from you. Such data includes:

  • IP addresses assigned to you
  • The DNS server that you are using
  • The online activities you engage in including the sites that you visit with a VPN connection
  • The amount of bandwidth used and for how long

As you can probably deduce, there is no point in having a VPN connection (supposedly anonymous) if someone can have all the above information about you. And that’s why a logs policy matters.

ibVPN notes that they have a strict no logs policy. They indicate that they 100% do not collect logs from any of their customers. Here is quote from their site on the matter:

“We do NOT collect or log any traffic or use of the VPN, SmartDNS, or proxy services.“

ibVPN is located in Romania, so it easier to trust what they have to say on the matter of logs because the country is not part of the five or nine eyes coalition of nations that spy on the rest of the world.

ibVPN for Netflix

You want to watch the latest in TV shows and movies? Then, you better be armed with a VPN because Netflix won’t serve you any of that unless you are part their core North American and Western European audiences.

And it is not just Netflix, almost any other streaming service (they are mostly located those regions anyway) will discriminate against anyone who does not appear to be part of their core audiences.

The way they tell this is via IP addresses. If your IP address shouts Africa, East Asia, Middle East and so on, then you are doomed. Knowing this, we tried to stream on Netflix with an American IP address assigned to us by ibVPN to see if Netflix would detect our deceptive connection.

We got it right with ibVPN! You must know that not many VPN apps ace this test. Netflix is very good at detecting proxies, but we have also come to understand why that is so. If you follow the following tips, you might be able to beat Netflix all the time:

  • Don’t use IP addresses from different regions when connecting to Netflix. If you choose American-based IP addresses, stick to that as long as you can
  • If you plan on changing your IP address, always sign out of Netflix first and clear the cookies on your browser
  • If you could find a dedicated IP address, always use that with Netflix or any streaming service
  • Finally, have the internet kill switch turned on as that way, Netflix will never learn your original IP address

ibVPN for Torrenting

Nowadays, you can get almost any file or software for free as long as you have a Tor client like uTorrent to back you up.

The Pirate Bay and similar sites are on overload with pirated content and the only risk that you will likely to encounter is getting caught by the FBI or some other copyright enforcement agency.

With a VPN app, however, you don’t have to worry about any of that because with an anonymous connection, you can download as many files as you want without the associated risks.

Torrenting without VPN:
266 kb/sec
Torrenting with VPN:
252 kb/sec
Speed deduction: -5%
Excellent

ibVPN is ideal for torrenting because the app has many servers that are dedicated to P2P activity. We tried one of these to see what effect it would have on the download speeds. Percentage change in download speeds: 5%.

We’ve got to say that ibVPN is one of the best apps for torrenting there is in the VPN universe. It is simply amazing.

Tor Check

The Tor network is the number one privacy and security focused browser on the internet. But despite the hype, it is still possible for some government, or hacker to snoop on you as it is less secure than a VPN.
You can, however, add an extra layer of protection to the network by browsing using a VPN app. ibVPN has Tor over VPN servers that allow you to do just that. We tested them to see if we are able to access some of our favorite onion sites.

See, it works really well.

Simultaneous connections:

ibVPN is available to users of the following platforms: Windows, Android, Linux, iOS, and macOS.

There are also browser extensions for Google Chrome, Opera, and Mozilla Firefox. With a single subscription, at least for the plan that we purchased, you can connect up to five simultaneous connections.

For this review, we downloaded the app on a desktop phone and on an Android device. The app’s interface for these two platforms is very detailed, and may be confusing for that reason. Typically, the interface design of VPN apps is simple with easier settings, something that ibVPN seems to lack.

Customer Support

IbVPN

The customer care team can be reached through email or live chat. The live chat is by far the most effective way of getting help because the response is instantaneous.

We tried asking a number of questions regarding the number of servers under their management and got the following response.

They were very helpful to say the least.

Pricing

ibVPN has daily plans that are bundled as monthly, yearly and semiannually. Each of the plans, of course, has its strength and weaknesses. The standard VPN plan, for instance, offers unlimited bandwidth, high speeds and one device connection.

On the other hand, the ultimate VPN offers smart DNS with 350 unblock channels, turbo fast streaming connections, P2P torrents, and HTTP Proxies. Meanwhile, the Torrent VPN plan offers a special package for those looking to download torrents. Finally, the Smart DNS plan is a special streaming package. It too allows just one device connection.

As far as we were are concerned, the ultimate VPN plan is the best plan and that is what we purchased for this review:
