StrongVPN review

StrongVPN is one of the best VPN apps on the market at the moment. It is fast, secure, and reliable on many fronts. Among the app’s strong selling points are its speed and consistency making it excellent for torrenting and streaming. Some of the security and privacy credentials to expect include military grade encryption, IP and DNS leak protection, and a strict no logs policy. Perhaps the only drawback of the app is that on Netflix, you might get a “proxy detected error,” but if you could subscribe to Netflix or any other streaming service with one of their IP addresses, I don’t suppose that you would encounter any problems. Should you buy the app? It is one of the best out there and comes at a reasonable price so, definitely.

Speed tests

Ordinary connection
Download: 11.64 Mbps
Ping: 37 Ms
Upload: 1.45 Mbps

A fast VPN is what you need and StrongVPN does not disappoint on this. You might notice that in this test, there was about a 20% in speed after connecting to the VPN service, but that is to be expected given how VPN apps work by rerouting internet traffic.

Checking VPN servers

As you can see, the download speed was largely unaffected which means that even without putting the app through any more tests, we can already anticipate that it will be excellent for streaming HD content and torrenting.

Servers

950+ servers
26 countries

Everybody wants to use VPNs with many countries, 50 and more. In StrongVPN you can find only 26 countries, which is not so good. It doesn’t have servers in countries like Argentina, Greece, New Zealand.

Although some servers are slower than others, you got to it give it to StrongVPN for the consistent speeds it demonstrates. That means that for the most part, you can use any server and expect good results.

Security features

Privacy is in the mind of everyone who purchases a VPN app. In fact, VPN apps were created in the first place so that they could help corporate clients’ access online databases securely. Here are some of the security and privacy credentials of StrongVPN:

Kill Switch

StrongVPN has a kill switch that will automatically disconnect you from the internet should the app malfunction. You have to enable this feature and my guess is that the reason it is not on by default is that it rarely experiences any performance issues.
If you are into say competitor research, I would strongly advise that you enable this feature, it might save your face. I did get “connection with OpenVPN has been severed” message and it could also happen to you.

Check all StrongVPN features

OpenVPN

The main protocol in use by StrongVPN is the OpenVPN protocol which happens to be one of the safest and fastest ways to set up a VPN connection.

OpenVPN is an open source software popular for its ease of use, strong security and compatibility features with advanced encryption standards, such as the AES 256-bit.

Scramble

The scramble option is not exactly a protocol, but it works with the OpenVPN protocol to make it harder for anyone to intercept your communicatons. StrongVPN recommends it for bypassing the Great Firewall of China.

WireGuard VPN

WireGuard is the latest VPN protocol to be introduced in many years. It is designed to be lightweight, secure, and fast. On StrongVPN, the technology is being tested out.

256-bit Encryption

StrongVPN uses the AES 256-bit encryption standard. It is the most secure way to send data over computer networks. Most VPN apps, as well as some of the world’s best militaries, use the same standard.

IP and DNS Leaks

How private is StrongVPN’s connection? Does StrongVPN lead to IP and or DNS leaks? Those are the questions that I sought to answer by performing DNS and IP leak tests on ipleak.org.

The IP address that you see here is the one that is assigned to me by the app and not my original one. This means that whatever website I visit on the internet, no one will be able to tell what my original IP address is.

Of late, the DNS test leak has not been working on Ipleak.org, but you can be rest assured that if your original IP address is not showing, neither will be your DNS server

Logs policy

Despite being located in the USA, Strong VPN has a strict no logs policy. The creators of the app make it clear that they do not collect or store any information that can be used to identify a user. While other apps located in the US make it clear what would happen if a federal court made a case for accessing customer data, StrongVPN does not address this. You should, however, know that, although the NSA is located in the US, and collects signals data around the world, privacy laws in the US are some of the stringent anywhere on the planet. Unless you are into really shady business, no one will be snooping on you.

Unblocking Netflix

You will likely get an error when using StrongVPN on Netflix. If it’s any consolation, lots of VPN apps also fail this test because Netflix has gotten really good at detecting falsified IP addresses.

Torrenting

Not every VPN app supports torrenting. In fact, some VPN providers will even discourage you from using their servers to download content on sites such as The Pirate Bay out of fear that they may be served with DMCA notices. StrongVPN supports torrenting as well as P2P activity. This alongside fast speeds and a strict no logs policy means that whatever online activities you engage in, they will remain private and you will hardly be exposed to discovery.

Torrenting without VPN:

Good

While torrenting with StrongVPN, it helps to look at the protocol used to set up the connection. Some protocols, such as the Scramble option, can be notoriously slow. The good thing is that there is plenty of documentation to guide you around.

As you can see, the speed of the connection is very fast. I tried using different servers and it was all consistent.

Tor Check

VPN apps and the Tor browser are the two most popular ways to privately and securely browse the internet. They use vastly different technologies to secure communications and some people prefer one to the other. But if your only concern is privacy, there is no reason why you should not combine the two technologies for a more secure connection. The two work seamlessly, but at times they may fail to support each other due to latency issues given that the Tor network is notoriously slow.

StrongVPN is one of those apps that performs very well with the Tor browser, see what I mean. I was still able to stream HD content on YouTube and with no downtime on what is notoriously a slow network.

You can install StrongVPN on devices running on multiple platforms, such as Android, Windows phone, iOS, Linux, Routers and TVs. A while back, the app even had browser extensions for Firefox and Google’s Chrome, but they no longer offer these alternatives.

Compared to other VPN apps that I have tested thus far, StrongVPN is a bit generous when it comes to the number simultaneous connections that a single subscription is allowed. You can connect as many as 12 devices which is more than enough to cover all computers in a small office.

For this review, I connected the app on a Windows desktop machine and on an Android phone. The app interface on these two devices looks incredible, although I found it to be a bit squeezed on the desktop.

Customer Support

StrongVPN

StrongVPN has an excellent customer support system in place. It is available on chat and mail on a 24/7 basis. I found the customer care team to be very helpful, especially when answering technical questions relating to how the app works.
