VyprVPN Review

The app fulfills all the basic expectations of a VPN app. With VyprVPN, you can privately and safely surf the internet and bypass most firewalls. The speeds are not bad either, as they do not limit what you can do on the net, especially if you already have a fast internet connection.

Streaming error on Netflix and IP leaks mean that VyprVPN is just your average VPN service, and although it is outstanding in some areas, I would say that it is a bit of a stretch to label it as one of the best VPN services on the planet.

Speed tests

Ordinary connection
Download: 19.01Mbps
Ping: 5 Ms
Upload: 15.22 Mbps

All VPN service providers claim to be fast, this, of course, makes a lot of sense because no one wants their internet connection to be so slow as to make it impossible to access their favorite sites. To see whether VyprVPN slows down the internet, I connected to their various servers’ across the world and measured the speeds on speedtest.net.

Checking VPN servers

If there is anything to make of these speed tests, it is that they are variable at best. Sometimes, they can be annoyingly slow as was the case for the Australian server, which more than halved the speed of my internet connection.

VyprVPN Security Features

With all the snooping going around, it is only natural to want to secure your communications with the help of a VPN app. But how secure will your communications be when using VyprVPN? First, we look at the encryption standard that is used by the app.

Military-grade encryption

VyprVPN employs the military-grade AES-256 encryption standard to secure communication over their servers. The AES-256 standard is also used by the Russian, Chinese, and US militaries to send classified information. With VyprVPN, you can be rest
assured that your data and communication are as secure as they can ever get.

As for protocols, VyprVPN uses several, including their very own Chameleon Protocol.

OpenVPN

Open VPN is the world’s most secure and popular protocol for establishing VPN connections. With OpenVPN, it is possible to set up secure connections that use the AES-256 encryption standard because it is the latest VPN technology available on the market at the moment. OpenVPN is open source, meaning that anyone is free to use and develop it.

Chameleon Protocol

Chameleon Protocol is a proprietary technology developed by Golden Frog, the company behind VyprVPN.

Chameleon scrambles OpenVPN packet metadata to make it unrecognizable via deep packet inspection, thus making it harder for governments, hackers, and other actors to eavesdrop on communications. For data encryption, the Chameleon technology relies on an unmodified version of the OpenVPN 256-bit protocol.

The technology comes in handy especially in places, such as China and North Korea where governments monitor all communications.

Kill Switch Option

Sometimes, the VPN app may malfunction and in the process lift your veil of privacy.

The way to stop this from happening is by enabling a kill switch that will automatically disconnect you from the internet if anything were to go awry. VyprVPN has such a kill switch, which is turned on by default.

IP and DNS Leaks

Does the VPN of your choice leak any data that are traced back to you? It is important to answer this question because after all, a VPN connection is not only supposed to secure your communication, but to also anonymize it.

The way to see whether a VPN connection is truly anonymous is to conduct and IP and DNS leak test on Ipleak.org.

The following are the results on VyprVPN:

For a server located in Austria, VyprVPN did not hide the IP address, which exposed me to detection. I would say this is a very serious reason to not rely on VyprVPN on secret communications and private surfing.

IP leak results:
Failure
DNS leak results:
No leaks

Logs policy

A no logs policy means that not even the VPN service provider will have information on what sites you are visiting. It is one of the things to look out for when reviewing the quality of a VPN app. VyprVPN does not log any of the following:

  • User’s source IP address
  • The IP address assigned to the user when using VyprVPN
  • Connection start or stop time
  • A user’s traffic or communication data

Unblocking Netflix

How well does VyprVPn perform when it comes to streaming content on Netflix?

Not very good is the simple answer. When I tried to stream content, I experienced errors that made it impossible to do anything. See for yourself.

Failure

Torrenting

A lot of people purchase VPN apps, so that they can get their favorite movies, apps, and tutorials for free.

Torrenting without VPN:
980 kb/sec
Torrenting with VPN:
20 kb/sec
Speed deduction: -98%

The key consideration here is privacy, but you also don’t want a VPN app that slows down your internet connection to the point that downloading anything becomes impossible.

Simultaneous connections:
3-5 devices

VyprVPN is available on all major platforms i.e. Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, IoS, TV, and routers.

The number of simultaneous connections supported by the app are 3 for the basic plan that goes for $5, and up to five devices for premium $6.67.

Customer Support

VyprVPN

My VyprVPN customer service experience was excellent. The customer care responded within five minutes of being contacted. They were also very polite and engaging. The service was however, slower on mail and it took about 3 hours before I got any response. It is not clear whether the chat operates 24/7, but I expect it to given to any company that has customers from every corner of the planet.

Pricing

VyprVPN has two pricing systems: basic and premium plans. The monthly basic plan allows you to connect 3 devices for $9.95 a month, while the premium plan goes for $12.95 a month. The yearly basic plan retails for $3.75 per month, while the premium version costs $5 a month. The main differences between the basic and the premium plans are the number of devices that can be connected, and access to the VyprVPN cloud, and the Chameleon Protocol. Although the company says that there is a 30 days money back guarantee, you will still get charged a non-refundable $1. It was something that I found to be annoying, especially given that there were no warnings.

As for the payment process, it was very smooth and easy. I, however, experienced some difficulties during the installation process as the app doesn’t download automatically as indicated on the page. You have to navigate outside the page to enable the download. Other than that, everything about VyprVPN was a piece of cake.
